玉堂春和王景隆历经种种磨难最终幸福团圆的结局在当时社会属于偶然的、个别现象。两人的爱情之所以成为世代相传的千古佳话的因素很多,其中不乏机缘巧合,同时体现了冯梦龙努力消弭自由爱情和封建婚姻冲突的尝试,把自由恋爱和封建伦理道德规范进行折衷调合的渴望。

In Chinese opera repertoire, Yu Tangchun, edited by Feng Menglong, is one of the most popular. In the story, the protagonist Yu Tangchun(alias Su San) finally reunites with her lover, Wang Jinglong after undergoing many twists and turns. That such a case has a happy ending was extremely exceptional, given the social environment at that time. Their legend has received widespread acclaim, attributed to more chance than Feng's endeavor to compromise between feudal ethnics and free love.
