The Influence of Consort Clan's Political Participation on Political Situation

中国古代社会历来视后妃及其亲族参政为不祥之兆,后世王朝为避免外戚之祸,对外戚涉政进行了严格的限制。而唐初帝王却重用外戚参与处理政事,其个中原因,实与唐初历史背景有关。唐初的外戚群体在政治上多表现为对李唐皇室的辅助作用,其参政巩固了唐初李唐政权,促成了贞观时期的清明政治,亦成为唐高宗至唐肃宗时期外戚干政之源。

The emperor＇s wives and families had been considered as negative factors wnen they took part in politics in ancient Chinese society. Later dynasties practiced strict constraint on this to avoid this problem. However, at the early period of Tang Dynasty, those people played positive roles as the Emperor＇ s political assistants, which was related to the historical background of that time. Their political participation contributed to the prosperity of Zhenguan period, but it was also the source of political problem from Emperor Gaozong to Suzong.
