Tracy K. Smith, winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Poetry Prize, is one of the most important poets of our time. She defines poetry as an art of duende that carries the poet and reader over space and time to ask the body's question, explore the unknown world, and experience the awe of belief. She recognizes image, form, music and departure as the four temperaments that a poet needs to be conscious of managing in a poem. Well cultivated in a rich school of English elegy and African American literary imagination, Smith succeeds in marrying a sci-fi vision to the genre of elegy and thus creating a poetic world of her own where she invites readers to envisage the future of mankind by calling attention to the power of it that is beyond, bigger than, and connected to us.
