The early 20th century witnessed the collapse of British community, caused by social transformation, and its consequent social and cultural problems. Indeed, T. S. Eliot has greatly contributed to the discussion on the collapse of British cultural community and one of the themes of his masterpiece, The Waste Land, is the anxiety over social transformation. The first cause of anxiety in The Waste Land is the dysfunction of traditional order and ethical ideas. The second is the environmental pollution caused by industrial development and overuse of technology. By exploringt the anxiety over social transformation, we can better understand the poem's cultural significance and Eliot's contribution to the British cultural community construction in the first half of the 20th century.
