The Burials of the Spring-and-Autumn Period in Shengang,Xiangyang,Hubei

沈岗墓地位于襄阳市高新技术产业开发区团山镇余岗村六组沈岗自然村西南一个东西走向的近长方形自然岗地上，海拔高67～69米，高出周边地表2～5米，其中心地理坐标为北纬32°04′58″、东经112°07′16″。墓地东西长约500、南北宽约300米，总面积约15万平方米，西北与余岗自然村相邻，西距古邓城遗址直线距离约2公里，东距长虹北路约300米，北距邓城大道约500米（图一）。

In 2004 to 2007, Xiangyang Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted a series of archaeological coring tests and excavations to the Shengang Cemetery at Shengang Village in Xiangyang City, by which over 900 burials from the Western Zhou to the Sui and Tang Dynasties were recovered. These burials were densely arranged, and the superimposition and intrusion relationships were frequently seen. The three burials of the Spring-and-Autumn Period were vertical earthen shaft pit burials in rectangular plan, the grave goods unearthed from which included bronzes, pottery wares and jades. The bronze ritual vessel assemblages of these three burials were ding-tripod, basin/wine cup or ring-tripod, fu-vessel and fou-jar. The dates of these three burials were the late stage of mid Spring-and-Autumn Period and early stage of late Spring-and-Autumn Period; they belonged to the Chu State or the states under the Chu System, and their occupants were low-ranking aristocrats such as ＂shi （serviceman）＂. The excavation of the three burials of the Spring- and-Autumn Period provided valuable physical materials for the studies on the burial system and customs of the burials of the Chu State in Xiangyang area and the local Chu Culture during the Spring-and-Autumn Period.
