论葛浩文的层级式文化翻译策略——读莫言《檀香刑》译本

On the Hierarchical Adaptation in Howard Goldblatt's Translation of Tan Xiang Xing

《檀香刑》是莫言小说中一部较为特别的作品,其叙事方式和语言风格具有极其鲜明的艺术特色。文章从"信"与"顺"的视角出发,分析葛浩文译本对原作的韵律特点、文化内涵和修辞风格的处理方式,将其翻译策略总结为"取之以信,舍之以顺",即在内容和形式上尽量贴近原作,并在必要的情况下进行层级式的调适和取舍,以确保文本的可读性。这一翻译策略体现了葛浩文对原作文化内涵和语言特点的充分尊重,对中国文学作品的译介和中华文化海外传播具有重要的参考价值。

Tan Xiang Xing is an amazing work of Mo Yan with a unique way of narration and distinct style of language. This paper, in terms of ＂faithfulness＂ and ＂readability＂, explores Goldblatt＇ sstrategies in dealing with rhythm and rhyme, culture-loaded terms and stylistic features in his translation of Tan Xiang Xing, which can be summarized as ＂preserving for faithfulness and omitting for readability＂. In other words, Goldblatt tends to retain in his translation both the content and form of the original to the greatest extent while ensuring the readability of his version with the necessary strategy of what we call ＂hierarchical adaptation＂. Such strategy reflects Goldblatt＇ s full respect for the cultural implication and writing style of the original work, shedding light on the translation of Chinese literature as well as on the international transmission of Chinese culture.
