传统婚恋观误读现象评析——以理雅各《诗经》译本为例

On the Misinterpretation of the Traditional Marriage Concept——Taking James Legge's Version of The Book of Songs as a Case

理雅各三译《诗经》,其《诗经》英译本已经成为西方世界公认的标准译本。文章以理雅各1871年《诗经》英译本为例,从译者对"一夫多妻"制的批判,对联姻制度的曲解,对婚姻缔结和婚姻解除的误读以及对自由婚恋观的忽视等方面出发,分析理雅各对中国传统婚恋观的误读,阐述译者背后的翻译思想与翻译策略,以期为今后中国典籍英译提供参考。

James Legge（1815-1897）, a famous British missionary in the nineteenth century, has produced three English trans- lations of The Book of Songs, whose translation version has been regarded as the standard translation in the west world. Based on Legge＇s version published in 1871, this paper points out Legge＇s misunderstanding on Chinese traditional love and marriage concept from the following five aspects： criticizing the Chinese plural marriage system; misunderstanding alliance by marriage; misreading marriage connection and marriage dissolution; overlooking free love and marriage concept. Besides, it also espounds the translation thoughts and translation strategies in order to provide the reference to the future English translation of Chinese classics.
