Study on the Development of Dreiser's Aesthetic Creation Through Close Reading and Comparison of Two Versions of Nigger Jeff

两个版本的"杰夫"有着相同的故事情节,并且都具有典型的德莱塞式的写实风格。然而通过对两个版本的小说进行文本细读和对比发现,1918年的"杰夫"不但在写作手法上更加成熟,在主题思想上也更加深刻。两个版本是德莱塞文学创作的两个不同时期,分别展现了其在不同创作时期的作品的风格和特点,这两个文本也是了解德莱塞文学创作发展以及深入理解他的自然主义风格的生动教材。

These two versions of'Nigger Jeff'have the same plot and realistic style which is typical of Dreiser;however,through close reading it's easy to notice that compared with the Ainslee's Version,the Free Version of'Nigger Jeff'is more mature in its fictional techniques and profound in its aesthetic.This illustrates that as an artist,Dreiser have different aesthetic beliefs and fictional techniques at various stages of his career.Different versions of'Nigger Jeff'provide us with an excellent opportunity to study Dreiser's developing aesthetic.
