This essay attempts to compare the four different computer drafts and the final published version of Children of Darkness by Wong Bik-Wan, exploring the considerations and decisions she made in her creative process. The author made conscientious and judicial use of the local dialect. Through drafts to final publication, the Cantonese dialect and fowl languages were liberally interspersed. From the selective depiction of the female characters and the gradual mellowing of the narrative tone, we can see the author is adapting her long-established writing style, so as to reflect closely the character and experience of the human subjects. The first-person narrative is consistent in all revisions to accentuate the protagonist's self-consciousness. In sum, the changes and non-changes made by the author in these drafts, were primarily motivated by her sympathies towards the people living at the edge of our society a literary demonstration of humanity.
