Based on the theory of defense qi,the clinical manifestations of abnormal blood sugar were analyzed and believed that the blood sugar coincides with the source, production and function of defense qi. High blood sugar results in fire and heat signs, even causing the orifice's blockage. Low blood sugar results in deficiency generating cold, exhausting of blood sugar causing lassitude and death. The physiological functions of blood sugar are similar with the functions of defense qi. The clinical manifestations of low blood sugar and high blood sugar are consistent with dysfunctions of defense qi in warming,qi transformation and consolidation. The blood sugar originates from water and food, pertaining to yang, heat in nature and similar to the defense qi. So the viewpoint of blood sugar pertaining to qi was put forward. Then, the dysfunction of defense qi exists throughout from various dangerous factors acting on human body to the occurrence of overweight, obesity and diabetes mellitus. Third, the dysfunction of defense qi related to the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus was proposed and proved on the base that the dysfunction of defense qi has close relationship with the pathogenesis of obesity. Diabetes mellitus originates from dysfunction of defense qi. Eating more, moving less and excessive defense qi caused excess of qi which was transformed into fat and oil resulting in overweight and obesity, finally causing diabetes mellitus.
