Reconstructions of Old Chinese phonology have received scholarly interest for long, with researchers com-paring the categories of medieval rhyme dictionaries with categories implied by ancient rhyming practice and the struc-ture of Chinese characters. One issue of concern pertains to the phenomenon of one rhyme group with multiple vowel systems in Old Chinese phonology. This paper aims to shed light on the criteria behind the different notations regard-ing one rhyme group with multiple vowels employed by different scholars, especially by Zhengzhang Shangfang, Wil-liam H. Baxter and Laurent Sagart, and Sergei A. Starostin. Also discussed in the paper are the principles and meth-ods adopted by different linguists to treat the phenomenon of Chongyun （重韵）in Old Chinese phonology.
