The“Chinese Dream”in Major Broadsheets of the US and the UK——A Corpus-based Critical Discourse Analysis of the Engagement Resources

用英美主要报刊中"中国梦"社论类新闻语篇建立评价语料库,以Martin和White的评价理论为依据对语料进行标注,采用定量与定性结合法分析语料中介入资源的话语意义。研究发现,扩展性介入明显比收缩性介入占比大,这有助于作者与尽可能多的读者结盟,但作者往往同时结合收缩性介入来反对读者可能持有的不同观点,从而达到自己的交际目的。

With the appraisal theory of Martin and White as the theoretical framework, this study combined quantitative and qualitative methodologies to explore how the engagement recourses in ＂Chinese Dream＂-themed news editorials, a corpus established from major broadsheets in the US and the UK, are arranged to communicate particular appraisal meanings. It is found that expanding engagement was used at a higher frequency than contracting engagement win more potential readers. Meanwhile, authors often simultaneously used the two methods to prevent readers＇ objections, which aimed to serve their communicative purpose.
