The extraordinarily fast rates of contaminant oxidation in the permanganate/bisulfite process suggest that "activation" of permanganate might lead to a new class of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in water treatment. The contact times required to oxidize substantial concentrations of organic contaminants with activated permanganate are very short, even when compared with conventional AOPs that have been optimized and validated over many years of research and development.
