With Gtterdmmerung,the Houston Grand Opera completed its four-year maiden voyage of the Ring Cycle.Directed by La Fura Dels Baus from Spain,the production is a bit of a mixed-bag in ideas and styles,although memorable visual effects are dispersed throughout.From the musical point of view,it was a complete success,topped by Christine Goerke's commanding portrayal of Briinnhilde in her first American performance of this daunting role.The orchestra played the music as if they have been playing it for a long time,with supple strings,soft-grained winds,and brilliant brass.
