Collectivism and Collective Ethos in Classical Chinese Rhetoric

摘要 The paper explores two aspects in classical Chinese rhetoric: collectivism and collective ethos. It looks closely at some of the key notions, like harmony, face, and cheng-yan (诚言) to show how the spirit of collectivism drives Chinese rhetoric on a path different from its Western counterpart, which is defined as an art of persuasion characteristic of personal endeavors.
