Successful revitalization of brownfelds typically requires a high degree of partnership and collaboration among government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private sector developers. Since its inception, EPA's Brownfelds Program has grown into a proven, results-oriented program that has changed the way contaminated property is perceived, addressed, and managed. In addition to improved public health and environmental quality, benefts include new housing, businesses, public facilities, and parks and the creation of new jobs. The program continues to look to the future by forming new partnerships and constantly exploring creative new ways to help revitalize communities throughout the United States. By presenting a case study from Connecticut, the author illustrates how a sense of partnership and cooperation between various levels of government, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations is an important factor in the successful cleanup and redevelopment of brownfelds.
