A schematic interpretation of The Scarlet Letter

运用图式理论的基本原理 ,分析对《红字》存在的两种误读 :其一 ,对“海关”一章的地位和作用的误读 ;其二 ,关于《红字》主题的误读。《红字》这部小说不适合关于一般小说的图式 ,在这部小说中 ,作为社会背景的“海关”一章相对于小说的主体结构而言是“外置”的。这是对一般小说图式的偏离。《红字》不是一般的爱情小说或犯罪心理小说 ,而是关于时代和社会问题的小说。

Based upon the basic principles of schema theory, the two misinterpretations of The Scarlet Letter are analyzed. The Scarlet Letter does not fit into the schema of a common novel. In The Scarlet Letter, 'the custom house', as the social background, in relation to the main body of the whole book, is extra-positioned. This is a structural deviation from the schema of a normal novel. The Scarlet Letter is not a novel about love or the psychology of sinners but one about the American society of that age.
