A new probe into vacuous extraposition

对两种空外置转换———动词宾语空外置转换与介词宾语空外置转换———应用范围的论述以及这两种宾语之间的比较 ,可以看出通常援引的有关该语言现象的强制性外置转换的概念似乎并非解释相关事实的适当方式 ,从而尝试性地提出把空外置转换始终作为选择性规则加以描述的新方法。

The concept of obligatory extraposition, currently invoked in grammars dealing with the phenomenon, seems not to be an adequate way of handling the relevant facts. Thus the new approach attempted here is a description which treats vacuous extraposition always as an optional rule.
