摘要
弥尔顿的美德观从本质上讲是基督教的美德观,同时,他的美德观还反映了人文主义的时代精神。对他来说,美德是接近上帝,获得个人救赎的阶梯,是自由的实质,而个人自由则是社会自由得以实现和维持的根本。弥尔顿对美德的重视体现了他对人在宗教和社会领域中的作用和地位的重视和肯定。在他看来,最重要的美德就是正确的理性、信仰和自制。
Milton s idea of virtue is essentially Christian. He gives Christian meaning to each traditional virtue. In the mean time, his idea of virtue is a mirror of the spirit of time-humanism. For him, virtue is the way to God and salvation, the essence of liberty, and personal liberty is the basic to realize and keep social liberty. The importance attached to virtue by Milton reflects his affirmation of man's function and position in religious and social domains. The most essential virtue for him are right reason, faith and self-mastery.
