The paper reviews the contributions of William Watt, a scientist of UK Royal Aircraft Establish- ment at Farnborough, to the progress of PAN-based carbon fiber technology for UK and the world. The re- search and the tragedy result of CFRP blade "Hyfil" of Rolls-Royce plc are briefly introduced and the rea- son of why UK's technological development of PAN-based carbon fiber went rapidly from prosperity to de- cline is analyzed.
