This paper is a literature review of language teaching and research in the virtual environments, including five parts. The first part briefly reviews the three main stages of CALL. The second part is a summary of relevant theories, focusing on some key learning theories such as Constructivist Learning Theory, Situativity Theory and Engagement Theory. The third part introduces some commonly used network technologies and their applications in language teaching. The fourth part expands on the role of language teachers as the motive power in the implementation of network based language teaching, and in the development of online courses. The authors also anticipate the prospects of Network Based Language Teaching in China
