With their increasing population and for their future survival and development, Chinese Americans in North Carolina started to set up their own non-profit organizations in the 1970s. On the one hand, these organizations helped form important connections among local Chinese Americans; on the other hand, they also serve as a bridge between Chinese Americans and other ethnic groups as well as a platform to communicate and collaborate with China. Based on participant observation, individual interviews, and document analysis, this paper will first introduce the types, members, and operations of these Chinese American organizations. Next, it will explore the social functions of these organizations. In addition, this paper will analyze the similarities and differences between non-profit Chinese organizations in North Carolina and other Chinese American organizations in America.
