The Kashubs (Kaszubians, Kassubians, Cassubians, Cashubes or Kashubes) have existed for more than a thousand years. They belong to one of the West Slavic ethnic groups, who used to settle in Pomerania; the Griffin (Gryphon or Griffen) , originated from Greek Mythology, is regarded as their totem. By reasons of being governed repeatedly in history by different races, the Kashubs have experienced tremendous misfortune and mistreatment, to the extent that the Kashubian settlement area was significantly reduced. Nevertheless, they have been maintaining their belief in the Griffin, which helps them to keep fighting indefatigably throughout history.
