摘要
甲戌本《石头记》是胡适创立新红学的奠基石,胡适购藏它之前,曾收到卖书人胡星垣的一封信,信中介绍此书“惟只存十六回”.此信被后期红学研究者纷纷引用,信中手书繁体“只”字有识作“祇”者,也有识作“祗”者,今“祇”“祗”“只”共存于红学论著中.“祇”“祗”虽仅一“点”之差,含义迥异,胡星垣信中只能是“祇”而不是“祗”,二者不可混淆.
Dr.Hu Shih bought the book “A Dream of Red Mansions” Version 1954 from Mr. Hu Xing-yuan in 1927. Before the deal, Mr. Hu Xing-yuan had written Dr. Hu Shih to tell him that the book was an imperfect one and only 16 chapters left. As the letter was handwritten, when the later researchers use it as evidence to study the book, the word “Zhi”（ 祇 ） was sometime identifi ed as “Zhi”（ 祗 ） incorrectly because the two are alike very much. Comparing and analyzing the authoritative data in the base of professional dictionaries, the author tells the true character of Mr. Hu Xing-yuan’s manuscript in his letter.
