Mevlut, the protagonist in Orhan Pamuk's latest novel A Strangeness in My Mind, is a street vendor and holds curious observation on the city, which helps him to become an urban flaneur that Walter Benjamin had depicted. His diachronic observation on Istanbul lasting for nearly half a century, together with related nostalgic feeling and behavior, is recalling the city's memory. Besides, Mevlut is greatly concerned about his personal memory and identity. The flaneuring is the vital method for him to fight against the concepts of time and space and to maintain the consistence of identity. This protagonist's flaneuring, essentially speaking, displays Pamuk's contemporary mission to write about Istanbul and its memory, and his philosophical refections on issues such as identity, memory and time.
