The global soil environment has been under in- creasing pressure due to rapid industrialization and urbanization, along with intensive farming on arable land. In particular, the soil environmental quality in China is deteriorating in a rapid pace according to the "National Soil Pollution Survey" by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Land and Resources of China (released on April 17, 2014). The pollution has resulted in food crop contamination to levels that could threaten human health and eco- system functions. To address these issues, the State Council of China recently released the "Action Plan on Prevention and Control of Soil Pollution" on May 28, 2016, with aims to protect uncontaminated lands and to implement risk management and remediation strategies for the contaminated soil.
