Gunki Monogatari and War Literature

日本古典文学中有关战争的作品,一般被称为"军记物语",本文重新探讨了这一常识性概念。首先,"军记物语"包含了不同类型的作品。一般认为"军记物语"是指以武士为中心的英雄故事,但是《将门记》《平家物语》就不能仅仅作此理解。其次,描写战争的日本古典文学不限于"军记物语"。有关战争叙述的文学其他还有不少,如若思考日本人的战争观,就有必要研究这些书籍。日本文学中的"战争与文学"这一课题,有必要从更广的视野作重新探讨。

This paper reconsiders the commonly accepted nature of Gunld Monogatari, that genre of Japanese classical literature centering on themes of war. First, we must acknowledge that Gunki Monogatari includes different kinds of works. Usually, these works are considered as heroic stories played out around samurai characters. But, for example, Sho-rnonki and Heike-Monogatari or Tale of the Heike cannot be described in such terms. Second, Gunki Monogatari is not the only genre which is connected to war in classical Japanese literature. There are many other literary works related to military narratives and warfare. More research on this genre is needed in order to know the Japanese view of war. The subject of War and Literature in Japanese literature needs to be explored from a broader perspective.
