The novel Village Officials by Zhao Xiantao depicts the governance from five village offi-cials in succession in Haojiaying Village, and gives an analysis of dominating culture, or rather non-eco-logical culture. Women＇s survival is an important aspect of the village governance. In this novel, there is much depiction about the fate of women who repeat their miseries year in year out. And there are plenty of writer＇s perspectives： critical value, the value of justice and conscience and the value of religion. A great sympathy for the fate of the people who live in China at the grassroots and a call to the modern civilization of the modern country can be found in this novel.
