襄阳地名由来考

Investigations of Original Name of “Xiangyang”——the Early Development of Xiangyang and the Change of Its Address

文章依据文献考证,逐条提出对襄阳是"在襄水之阳"而名这一传统解释所存在的疑问;又以襄字取自《尚书》"怀山襄陵"之语为线索,重新解释襄水所指为"汉水溢"。进而尝试回归到历史语境下展开讨论,将通例规则与地形实际相结合,论证襄阳之阳并非如"山南水北谓之阳"理解,而是汉初对设县新地的一种泛称,为"取其嘉名"之美,在地域范围内呈现出特殊的分布规律。以此而论,透过对襄阳地名中所包含的历史地理信息进行挖掘,探寻襄阳地方城市史研究的新视角。

On the basis of literature research, the paper will put forward a detailed query about the traditional interpretation that Xiangyang is the ＂north＂ of water because the word of ＂Xiang＂ dates back to the ＂Huai mountain Xiang Ling＂ in ＂Shangshu＂, and reinterpret ＂Xiang River＂ actually means ＂Overflow of Han River＂. And then, back to the historical context, the paper tries to combine general rule and actual terrain to demonstrate that the ＂Yang＂ of ＂Xiangyang＂ doesn＇t means ＂South site of Yang＂. It＇s just a generality to some new counties for the beauty of ＂take its name＂ in the early Han dynasty, presenting a special distribu- tion of geographical scope. On this basis, by digging fully the historical geography information about the name of ＂Xiangyang＂, we can preliminaryly explain why ＂Xiangyang＂ town migrated eastward and northward in the historical period.
