《红楼梦》除成功塑造了宝玉、黛玉、凤姐等重要人物之外,作者还描写了众多小人物,小红和贾芸即是其中两个。此二人是书中大关目上一对发挥了重要作用的人物,他们因宝玉和凤姐的偶然眷顾而结下良缘,在宝玉和凤姐抄家受难时仗义探庵,报知遇之恩,千里伏线与之产生大关联。
