胡应麟将元诗列入中国诗歌发展谱系,认为元诗是承前启后的过渡期,开启了正德、嘉靖诗风。胡应麟批评元诗的标准是唐诗,他肯定元诗学唐的路向,但认为元诗整体成就不高,原因是过于临模又失之太浅。表面上看,胡应麟认为元诗整体上超过宋诗,但在具体操作中,他不自觉地对宋诗用力更深。胡应麟是第一位全面评价元诗的批评家,其观点对后人影响很大。

On the surface, Hu Yinglin believes that the achievement of Yuan poetry exceeds Song poetry. But in the specific operation, he unconsciously pays more attention to Song poetry. Hu Yinglin was the first critic to evaluate Yuan poetry in a holistic and comprehensive way, and his views had a great influence on later generations.
