This paper discusses the 'infantilizing undercurrent'in The Old Man and the Sea,based on the theory of covert progression,cognitive narratology and rhetorical narratology. By subtly framing Santiago as a child,Hemingway creates a unique 'code hero in growth'that constantly works towards perfection through persistence and self-encouragement. Rewriting the existential predicament of human being into a 'fable of Sisyphus',The Old Man and the Sea demonstrates a previously unnoticed aesthetic of tenderness in Hemingway's works.
