在汉代,《孝经》曾作为辅经之书,但在中国经学史上,一直有人将《孝经》作为儒家最重要的经典,其因大概有三:一是《孝经》所讲儒学道理,简明扼要,容易把握;二是《孝经》容易由理论转化为实践;三是宣传《孝经》,容易收到教化实效。汉唐时期治孝经学者百余家,主要为两大派:一派为今文《孝经》,以郑氏注(并非郑玄注)为主。一派为古文《孝经》,据称孔安国作传。两派互指其伪,难定是非。于是有唐玄宗御撰《孝经》。此御撰《孝经》,乃是玄宗本人亲撰。

In Han Dynasty,The Book of Filial Piety was taken as an assistant book for other classics,but in the histor of Conlu- cian classics,The Book of Filial Piety is always taken as one of the most important classics for the follow-ing three reasons. Firstly,The Book of Filial Piety illustrates Confucianism concisely and easy to understand. Secondly,the theories in this book are easy to put into practice. Finally,i t rs quite clear to find practical result through publicity of this book. There were over one hundred scholar groups in-vestigated into this book in Han and Tang Dynasties,which were mainly divided into two factions. One faction was new book of filial pi-ety ,which originated from the annotation by Zheng Xuan. The other faction was ancient book of filial piety,which originated from the annotation by Kong Anguo. Both factions accused each other and i t rs difficult to tell which faction was right. Under such situation Em-peror Tang Xuanzong personally re-composed the book which was known as royal edition of The Book of Filial Piety.
