The Dissemination of Chinese Culture in Europe by Missionaries during the Ming and Qing Dynasties

西方传教士在中国研习中文、译介中国经典等文化活动,对明清时期中国文化在欧洲的传播作出了巨大的贡献。由于文化背景的差异,语言转换的目的和动机的影响,东西方两种文明和思想在交流过程中势必引起碰撞和冲突,这造成了明清时期传教士对中国语言和文化存在一定的误读,其混淆基督教教义和儒家文化内核的问题也较为突出,尽管如此,传教士的文化活动,为中西文化交流的健康发展提供了坚实的基础。

Western missionaries made great contributions to the dissemination of Chinese culture in Europe during the Ming and Qing Dynasties by studying Chinese characters and translating Chinese classics in China. Due to the differences in cultural backgrounds and the influences of the purpose and motivation in language transformation,both the Eastern and Western civilizations and ideas were bound to cause collisions and conflicts in the course of communication,which resulted in the misunderstanding of the Chinese language and culture by missionaries. The most prominent issue is the confusion of Christian doctrine and Confucian cultural core. Nevertheless, the missionaries cultural activities provide a solid foundation for the healthy development of cultural exchanges between China and the West.
