The British novelist David Lodge does not agree with the view of ＂the death of the author＂. He inherited the Anglo--American writers＇ tradition of writing essays to expressing the author＇s voice. He composed two essays respectively named ＂The Year of Henry James＂ and ＂Writing H. G. Wells＂ for his biographical novels Author, Author and A Man of Parts. In the essays, Lodge not only reviewed the ori- gins and creative process of biographical novels, but also analyzed the characteristics and values of bio- graphical novels to defend this hybrid genre. Besides, Lodge~ s essays reaffirm the relationship between writers and works, highlight the author＇s subjectivity, and refute the view of ＂the death of the author＂ and thus reclaim the return of the author.
