在《人物志》一书中,刘卲以"材"论性。阴阳五行决定了人的材性,而人外在不同的"九征"反映了人先天禀赋的不同的材性。在上位者只有是"兼材",才能识别和举荐兼材和不同的偏材。家世对人才的仕途有一定的影响。《人物志》儒、道、名、法思想兼综的同时,也有一些刘卲对世人的人生经验的总结,目的是为了解决现实问题。

In Records of Personages, the writer LIU Shao explains human nature with ＂materials＂. And Yin-yang and five elements determine a man＇s talent. His nine external characteristics can show people＇s different talent of natural endowment. Only the people in high status have various abilities and can distinguish and recommend others with such abilities and particular talent. Family tradition exerts certain influence on the talent＇s official career. The book has accepted the thoughts of Confucianism, Taoism, legalism and logicians. In addition, it has some summary of people＇s life experience by the writer which aims to find solutions to some practical problems.
