Russian sinologist L.K.Pavlovskaya calls the Chinese pinghua 'folk historical novels'.She not only makes a detailed analysis of the historical sources, time of writing, narrative structure and the use of official documents in The New Edition of Tales on the Five Dynasties through the method of emendatory textual criticism, but also has an in-depth inquiry into its ideological connotations.This article introduces Pavlovskaya's study and evaluates her contribution to research in the field of pinghua in the Song and Yuan Dynasties.
