Professor Wang Zhenduo: A Trailblazer in Archaeological Science

王振铎先生是著名的博物学家和科技史家,还是科技考古和技术史研究的开拓者之一。他在长达半个世纪的工作中复原并陈列于诸多博物馆的古代器械,总数达76种之多。在指南车、水运仪象台、冶铁鼓风机、司南等复原研究中,他善于把史学、考古学、考据训诂与科学素养及传统工艺的践行结合起来,提出了研究和复原古代科技的三条准则。他为人真诚谦逊,治学严谨,是一位道德文章堪为楷模的前辈学者。

Professor Wang Zhenduo （ Wang Chen-to, 1911 - 1992） was a renowned museologist and historian of science and technology, as well as one of the pioneers in archaeological science. For as long as half a century, he was committed to reconstructing ancient devices, more than 76 of which were displayed in numerous museums. In the study and reconstruction of, for instance, the south- pointing carriage, water-driven astronomical tower, iron-smelting bellows and south-pointer, he excelled at combining history, archaeology and textual exegesis, proposing three criteria for the study and reconstruction of ancient science and technology. As a man of sincerity and humility and a rigorous and considerate scholar, Wang Zhenduo established himself as a model example of knowledge and morality.
