In the inner wall of the late Western Zhou (1046-771 BCE) earthenware imitation of a bronze food vessel, excava- ted from site C3M434 at the Tangcheng Garden, Luoyang City, Henan Province in 2002, there were inscribed divinatory numbers, symbols, and pictures. Taking advantage of the achievements from academic circles, this paper interprets the five numerical hexagrams and pictures based on the divinatory numbers, and concludes that numerical hexagrams featured related hexagram statements (of the received version of Zhou yi) as prognostication. Making reference to the numerical hexagrams inscribed in oracular bones from the Yin dynasty ruins, the paper points out that prognosis by hexagram statements and the method of divination by fifty yarrow stalks came into being very early and coexisted with other methods and systems of divination at that time.
