Corpus linguistics focuses on authentic language facts, investigating the forms, meaning, and functions of language. Halli- day has made great contribution to the development of corpus linguistics, who disagrees with the dichotomies such as the Saus- surean langue and parole, Chomskyan language competence and language performance, and views language as system, the sum of instances. This is an important theoretical foundation for corpus linguistics. Halliday emphasizes the theoretical pursuit of corpus linguistics by arguing that frequency in text is the instantiation of probability in the grammar. This paper discusses Halliday＇s view of language, and his opinions on the status of corpus linguistics, practical experiences in corpus-based research, and propositions on applying corpora to systemic-functional grammar research.
