作为近代中国史上的风云人物,张之洞认识到教育的重要性,并在其主政山西、广东期间扶持、发展教育,在这些地方的教育尝试,为张之洞在湖北进行教育改革提供了经验。张之洞曾长期主政湖北,并在湖北推行了系列教育改革。张之洞在湖北的教育改革初以培养实学人才、满足近代工业需要、脱去传统八股影响为主,后则从教育制度、师资队伍、教材等各个方面,对湖北教育进行全面改革,并从经费上为湖北教育提供保障,使湖北成为当时中国教育最为领先的省份,对湖北影响深远。

Zhang Zhidong,a famous man of modern Chinese history,attaches great importance to education and advanced the development of schooling when he was in charge of the government affairs in Shangxi and Guangdong provinces.When he became a head of Hubei province later,he promoted a series of reforms of education in Hubei.His insist on the reform of "Chinese learning for fundamental principles and Western learning for practical application" has made Hubei Province the most advance one in education and also generated far-reaching influence on modern education.
