Baculoviruses are characterized by a large circular double-stranded DNA genome, the ecdysteroid UDPglucosyltransferase(EGT) was produced by egt gene after infecting insects. Catalytic activity of EGT can inactivate ecdysteroids, prevent the metamorphosis of larvae, thus contributing to the virus reproduction. Several lines of evidence have shown that the deletion of the egt from the nucleopolyhedrovirus genome shorten the dearth time and eliminate the upward climbing behavior of lepidopteran larval host. A recent study reported that egt expression in egt-transgenic silkworms results in arrest of metamorphosis from pupae to moths. Studies on the molecular mechanism of EGT and its interaction with host proteins will deepen our understanding of the effect of baculovirus on host growth and behavior changes. It is not only conducive to the production of agriculture(especially the silk industry, such as fresh cocoon reeling), but also provides new ideas for the research and development of new efficient biopesticides.
