Rethink Yan Fu's Translation Principle——the “Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance”

"信达雅"自提出以来,一直被奉为译界的圭臬,对我国近现代的翻译实践有着重要指导价值;此外,也启迪着我国近现代以来的诸多翻译理论探索。随着对翻译的深入认知,译界不少学者对此产生误解,提出异议,甚至进行批评,而这一切根源于割裂了该理念提出的历史背景和现实社会情况。文章回顾严复先生的生平经历,重温其理论提出背景和对理论的阐述,旨在还原"信达雅"的原本面目,探究其理论和作品翻译的合理性。

The translation principle ＂faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance＂ has been regarded as a treasure in translation circle of China since it was raised by Yan Fu. It is not only a valuable guidance for practices of translation in Modern Times, but also enlightens the research of many modern and contemporary translation theories of China. With further study of translation, many scholars propose various misunderstandings and objections to it or even criticize it. The real reason is that they do not think too much about its historical backgrounds and social situations when it was presented. This paper introduces Yan Fu＇s life experiences and returns to its historical backgrounds and Yan Fu＇ s original statements, aiming at restoring its original appearance and learning the reasonable existing of this principle and Yan Fu ＇ s works.
