The Adventures of Miss Sophia Berkley, an epistolary Gothic novel, adopts various plot elements and key themes of Samuel Richardson's novels. Part-imitation and part- invention, its experiments with the epistolary form, however, reflect the author's knowledge of Edmund Burke's A Philosophical lnquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful and conduce to the author's "Protestant" exploration of the "virtue rewarded" theme. An allegorical reading of the "virtue rewarded" theme in The Adventures of Miss Sophia Berkley locates this early Irish Gothic novel within the context of mid-Eighteenth-century Irish politics, and reveals the paradoxical nature of its expression of Irish Protestant patriotism.
