The Portrait of a Lady is the early work of Henry James and one of his masterpieces. Through the male writer＇s unique female consciousness and delicate description, the author creates a group of pure-hearted, stubborn and conservative women who have great vitality, love life, pursue freedom and think uniquely. Different from the previous female images, this group of women characters are vividly depicted, both open and conservative. They have their own thoughts and fight for personality liberation. However, due to the limitation of the traditional regime and ingrained concepts in the patriarchal society, they cannot get rid of the male oppression but stroll in a narrow world. The sincere concern for women can be sensed through the analysis of female images in the work of James. James takes women as the cen- ter of the works, which becomes a respectable practice and has brought great influence on later writers.
