贾尔斯的《孙子兵法》英译本流行甚广,但也有很多值得探讨的地方。文章以信、达、雅的标准为出发点,从含义和文体风格两个方面对贾尔斯译本中存在的主要失误进行了分析,并佐以具体例证,指出了文化背景知识的了解对准确理解和翻译原文至关重要。

Although The Art of War translated by Lionel Giles is one of the most popular English versions, its translation still has much room for improvement. This paper, based on the translation standard of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance, has made an analysis of the main mistakes in meaning and style in Giles' translation by providing specific examples. It points out in conclusion that apart from language proficiency, the cultural knowledge is a key to the accurate understanding and translation.
