摘要
In The Age of Innocence,Edith Wharton's attitude to woman problem is quite ambiguous which was embodied by her characterization of New Woman Ellen and Mother Woman May. This is because of the social background of living and education restricts Wharton's full understanding of the social role of her female contemporaries. As a result, she exposes her ambiguous attitude in her novel.
