A headline is an inseparable component of news, which serves the role of eyes. So wring a brief, accurate and eye-catching headline is very important. With plenty of practical examples given, the paper discusses lexical features of English news headlines through different aspects, including the use of nouns and midget words, vogue words, derivatives, nonce words, loans and so on. It also introduces some translating strategies according to their distinctive lexical characteristics.
