On Study of Sentence as Unit of Translation

翻译单位是翻译理论研究的一个重要课题。在实际的翻译活动中,翻译单位的存在是无庸质疑的,但其选择不是一成不变的。该文回顾了以句子层为基本翻译单位,即以小句,句子和超句单位为基本翻译单位的观点,着重对以句子为最小翻译单位的观点作出分析,并举例说明了在翻译实践中应注意的问题。

The problem of the unit of translation is of significance in translation studies. In translation practice, its existence is in dubitable yet the choice variable. This essay reviews studies on the unit of translation in sentence levels, including studies of clause, sentence and sentences as the unit of translation, respectively. It gives priority to the study of sentence as the unit of translation and also illustrates potential problems that should be given due attention in translation practice.
