Tennessee Williams has been widely valued as a representative poetic playwright on singing laments for the declined cavalier South and the frustrated South belle. This paper aims at a different perspective, employs Frye's archetypal theory to research on the biblical archetypal symbols of the environment, the theme and the characters in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire and exposes the deeper reason for the success of this tragedy and its aspiration for the spiritually void modern man.
